It was a unique experience to be a photographer on a top hunt in Sweden together with hunters Gerdt Roger Olsen and Steinar Hynne. Top hunting is an ancient form of hunting where the hunter hunts capercillie that eat pine needles in the treetops. This exciting form of hunting is a challenging and demanding experience that provides a unique nature experience in the winter landscape.

Season and conditions

The peak hunt begins in earnest when the snow has settled. Winter conditions force the birds up into the trees to forage, as the ground is often covered in snow. The jay prefers pine trees, where it finds needles and buds as its main food during the cold season. The black grouse often chooses birch, but can also roost in pine.

High ground is ideal for birdwatching, as birds often migrate to these areas to find food. The chances of spotting birds in the treetops are greatest on cold, windless days after snowfall. The ideal temperature for birdwatching is between -5 and -15 degrees Celsius, and good binoculars are essential for spotting birds from a distance.

Equipment and weapons

To be successful in top hunting, the right equipment is essential. The rifle should be fired at a minimum range of 100 meters, and it is recommended to use full-jacketed ammunition to minimize damage to the bird. The impact of cold on accuracy can be noticeable, so the rifle should be fired at the temperature in which it will be hunted.
