On the Eagle's Terms

For many years I have followed the same pair of White-tailed Eagles and learned that they are among nature's most vigilant creatures.

They notice even the slightest changes in their surroundings, and for that very reason it has always been my goal to photograph them at their regular hunting perches—without them ever feeling disturbed.

The pair had two favourite perches, both located on the highest points in the landscape. From there they had a commanding view of the coastline, allowing them to scan for fish, seabirds and other prey. Before placing a camera nearby, I first had to understand exactly how the eagles used these perches. Over long periods, I observed them from a distance through binoculars, studying their approach in different wind conditions, how the light changed throughout the day, and finding the camera angle that would produce the most natural images without influencing their behaviour.

When the time was right, I installed camouflaged camera boxes facing the perches. The boxes remained untouched for an entire year, gradually becoming a natural part of the landscape. When I returned to Northern Norway the following year, I was delighted to see that the eagles were still using the same hunting perches, completely unaffected by the camera boxes. Only then were the cameras installed. When the first photographs appeared, I knew that the long period of planning had been worthwhile.

For me, wildlife photography is not about getting as close as possible—it is about being as invisible as possible. My goal is for the eagles to live their lives exactly as if the cameras did not exist. When that happens, a hidden world reveals itself—one that very few people ever have the opportunity to witness.

The cameras capture far more than dramatic take-offs and landings. They also record the quiet moments: when the eagle carefully preens every feather, stretches its wings after a period of rest, shakes the rain from its plumage, or sits motionless, gazing out over the sea while searching for its next meal. Sometimes it remains perfectly still for hours before silently spreading its impressive wings—nearly two and a half metres across—and gliding effortlessly into the landscape.

Some of the most remarkable footage has been recorded during the bright summer nights of Northern Norway. While the landscape is bathed in the soft light of the midnight sun, the eagle occasionally lowers its head and closes its eyes for a brief rest. These intimate moments are almost impossible to witness with a human observer nearby, yet they can be captured when the cameras work alone—entirely on the eagle's own terms.

The camera boxes have also revealed the rich wildlife surrounding the hunting perches. Otters, moose, reindeer and displaying Black Grouse have all passed in front of the cameras. Hooded Crows, Ravens, Arctic Terns, Eurasian Oystercatchers and gulls frequently gather to alarm and mob the mighty eagle.

The photographs therefore tell not only the story of the White-tailed Eagle, but also of the remarkable interactions between species in the vibrant coastal landscapes of Northern Norway.

The greatest reward, however, is not the photographs themselves. It is knowing that the eagles continue to return to the same hunting perches with the same confidence as before. Then I know that the planning has been successful and that the birds have never had to change their natural behaviour because of my presence.

A truly great wildlife photograph is not created by a camera alone. It is created through time, patience and respect—respect for the animal, the landscape and the rhythms of nature.
